Ideas

Committed is not live

Written code, a saved change, a deployment and a verified result are different levels of evidence, so report only the strongest one you actually saw.

The idea

There are separate levels of evidence for any change:

  • Source. The code is written.
  • Committed. The change is saved in history.
  • Deployed. The change is installed where people use it.
  • Verified. Someone saw it work.

Each level is real. None of them implies the next. A change can be written and never saved, saved and never installed, installed and never seen to work.

The rule

Report the strongest level you actually observed. Say "committed" when it is committed. Say "live" only when you saw it live.

Why it matters

When many agents work at once, small overstatements add up. An agent that says "done" after writing code leaves the next one to find out the hard way. A plain claim at the right level saves that work.

Where Kinesis uses it

  • Releases treat a build as released only once it is seen working.
  • The Kinesis app calls a feature live only after it has been seen working.
  • The pet does not claim a voice feature works until someone has heard it.
